A health guarantee sounds reassuring — but not all guarantees are created equal. Some cover very little, last only a few weeks, and are written in a way that makes claims nearly impossible. Knowing what to look for before you commit to a breeder can save your family a lot of heartache down the road.
Here’s what a genuine, meaningful puppy health guarantee should cover — and what we offer at Strong Oaks.

How Long Should a Guarantee Last?
This is the first thing to look at — and it’s where many breeders fall short in ways most families don’t realize until it’s too late.
A 30-day or 90-day guarantee is essentially meaningless. But here’s something that surprises a lot of people: even a one-year or two-year guarantee has serious limitations. Many of the most significant genetic conditions in Goldendoodles — hip dysplasia, certain heart conditions, spinal disorders — simply cannot be detected or confirmed until a dog is at least two years old. Some don’t present until even later.
That means a breeder offering a one-year guarantee is offering protection that expires right around the time real genetic problems might start to show up. A two-year guarantee is only marginally better. By the time you discover a problem and get a veterinary diagnosis, the clock may already have run out.
A genuinely meaningful guarantee covers your puppy for at least several years past that two-year threshold. At Strong Oaks, we offer a full 5-year health guarantee — one of the longest offered by any Goldendoodle breeder in the Southeast. That’s not a marketing number. It’s a reflection of the confidence we have in our parent dogs, our health testing program, and the way we breed.
What Conditions Should Be Covered?
At minimum, a reputable breeder’s guarantee should cover hereditary and congenital conditions — meaning health problems that are genetic in origin, not caused by accident or environmental factors. Look specifically for coverage of:
Hip and elbow dysplasia — a common concern in larger breeds including Goldendoodles. A serious breeder will cover crippling cases.
Life-threatening genetic defects — any condition that is genetically caused and threatens the dog’s life should be covered with proper veterinary documentation.
Pathological spinal disorders — spinal issues that are genetic in origin should be included in any comprehensive guarantee.
Our guarantee at Strong Oaks covers all three of these for the full 5 years from your puppy’s date of birth.
What Is Typically Not Covered — and Why
No legitimate guarantee covers everything, and that’s reasonable. Conditions that are typically excluded include intestinal parasites, kennel cough, ear mites, cherry eye, allergies, and injuries from accidents. These are either environmental, contagious, or not genetic in origin — meaning they aren’t related to the breeding program.
The key is that exclusions should be clearly listed and make logical sense. If a guarantee is vague about what it does and doesn’t cover, that’s a red flag.
What Are Your Responsibilities as the Buyer?
A good guarantee is a two-way agreement. In exchange for the breeder’s commitment, you’ll typically be required to:
Have your puppy examined by your own veterinarian within 48 hours of taking possession. This protects both parties and establishes a baseline health record.
Keep your puppy current on vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and regular dewormings.
Spay or neuter your puppy before 18 months of age if purchasing as a pet.
House the dog inside your home as a family member — not in an outdoor kennel.
At Strong Oaks, these are the exact terms of our guarantee. They’re straightforward, reasonable, and designed to ensure every puppy we place has the best possible life.
What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?
This is where many breeders fall short. A guarantee is only as good as the breeder standing behind it. Look for a clear process — not just vague language about “making it right.”
At Strong Oaks, our process is simple. Contact us immediately if a concern arises. Provide a written statement from a licensed veterinarian confirming the condition and its genetic cause. We then either refund the original purchase price or replace your puppy with the next available puppy of equal value.
We’ve been doing this for over 30 years, and we’ve always done right by our families. Our reviews speak for themselves.
The Bottom Line
A health guarantee is one of the clearest signals of how much a breeder stands behind their dogs. A short, vague, or hard-to-claim guarantee tells you everything you need to know. A comprehensive, long-term, clearly written guarantee tells you something very different.
