Virginia is a big state with a lot of dog-loving families — and Strong Oaks has been placing Goldendoodle puppies with Virginia families for decades. From the Shenandoah Valley to the Richmond suburbs to Northern Virginia, families make the drive to Morganton regularly because what they find here is worth the trip.
Where We Are and How Far We Are From You
Strong Oaks Goldendoodles is located in Morganton, NC — in the Blue Ridge Mountains between Charlotte and Asheville. For Virginia families, the drive depends on where you are in the state:
Roanoke and the New River Valley — about 2 hours south on I-81 and US-221. One of the closest Virginia markets to us and a very manageable drive for a puppy pickup day.
Lynchburg — about 2.5 hours, a straight shot south through the Virginia foothills.
Richmond — about 3.5 hours via I-85 south. Families from Richmond and the surrounding counties make this trip regularly and consistently tell us it was worth every mile.
Charlottesville and the Shenandoah Valley — about 3 to 3.5 hours depending on your starting point. A beautiful drive through some of Virginia’s most scenic countryside.
Northern Virginia, the DC suburbs, and the Fredericksburg corridor — about 4.5 to 5 hours. A longer day, but one that Virginia families in that corridor undertake because the quality and trust they find at Strong Oaks is not something they find closer to home.
Southwest Virginia — Johnson City, Bristol, Abingdon — about 2 to 2.5 hours east. Practically neighbors.
Why Virginia Families Choose Strong Oaks
Virginia dog owners tend to be serious about what they’re getting. They research thoroughly, ask good questions, and understand the difference between a responsible breeding program and a casual one. That’s exactly the kind of family we love to work with.
Both of our parent dogs are DNA tested through Embark before any breeding takes place — screening for over 250 genetic health conditions. Those results are publicly available. We want every Virginia family to review them before they ever fill out an application. Meet our parent dogs on our Our Dogs page.
Our puppies are born inside our home for the first five weeks of their lives — in the middle of real family life, handled daily, and raised with the kind of intentional early stimulation that produces confident, well-adjusted dogs. We follow a structured ENS and early socialization protocol from the very first days of life. At five weeks, puppies move to our dedicated puppy building with a doggie door leading outside, where they begin learning to go potty on their own.
Every puppy we place comes with a 5-year health guarantee covering crippling hip and elbow dysplasia, pathological spinal disorders, and life-threatening genetic defects. We have stood behind that guarantee for over 30 years.
The Goldendoodles We Raise
We breed F1, F1B, and F1BB Standard Goldendoodles — typically 50 to 80 pounds as adults. Virginia families tend to be drawn to the Standard size for good reason — these are substantial, athletic dogs that hold up well to the active outdoor lifestyle common throughout the state. Whether you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail, spending weekends on the water, or simply raising an active family in the suburbs, a Standard Goldendoodle fits that life well.

What Does a Goldendoodle Cost?
Virginia families often come to us after doing significant price research and finding a wide range — from $500 to over $4,000. Our honest breakdown of what a Goldendoodle costs and why explains exactly what drives that range and what you are actually paying for when you choose a responsible breeder. It is worth reading before you make any decisions.
Choosing Your Breeder
With so many breeders advertising online, knowing what to look for matters. Our guide on what to look for in a Goldendoodle breeder gives Virginia families 10 specific questions to ask — and what the answers should tell you — before committing to anyone, including us.
You Come to Us and Choose Your Puppy
When a litter is ready, Virginia families come to Morganton to meet the puppies in person. We share our observations about each puppy’s temperament and help guide your decision — but the choice is yours. For families who genuinely cannot make the drive, we work with trusted flight nannies and transport options to get puppies home safely.
Roanoke, Lynchburg, and southwest Virginia families typically find the drive very manageable. Families from Richmond, Charlottesville, and Northern Virginia often plan it as a longer day trip or combine it with a weekend in the mountains. Either way we will work with you to make the experience as smooth as possible.
Support After Your Puppy Comes Home
Joe has been working with dogs professionally since 1992. That experience is available to every Virginia family we place a puppy with — by phone, for the life of their dog. Our Goldendoodle Resources library is also available to you 24/7 — covering grooming, training, the first week home, ENS and early socialization, and much more.
Other Areas We Serve
In addition to Virginia, we regularly place puppies with families in North Carolina, Charlotte, Asheville, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.
