Finding the right Goldendoodle breeder is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in the process of bringing a puppy home. The difference between a responsible breeder and an irresponsible one isn’t always obvious from a website or a first phone call — but it shows up in the health, temperament, and wellbeing of the puppy you bring home.
Here are the questions worth asking, and what the answers should tell you.
1. Do you DNA test your parent dogs?
This is the most important question on the list. DNA health testing screens parent dogs for hundreds of heritable genetic conditions before breeding — conditions that can be passed silently from parent to offspring without either dog ever showing clinical symptoms.
A responsible breeder will be able to name the testing company they use and show you the results. At Strong Oaks, both of our parent dogs are tested through Embark, and those results are publicly available for you to verify yourself before you ever apply. That transparency is intentional — we want you to see exactly what we’re working with.
A breeder who says “our dogs are healthy” or “they’ve never had problems” without actual DNA testing isn’t answering the question.
2. Can I see where the puppies are raised?
The answer you want: yes, in our home.
Puppies raised in a family home from birth are exposed to the sounds, rhythms, and stimulation of daily family life from the very beginning. They’re handled regularly, socialized naturally, and arrive in your home already familiar with the kind of environment they’ll be living in.
At Strong Oaks, our puppies are born and raised inside our house for the first five weeks of their lives. At that point they move into our dedicated puppy building — a purpose-built space with a doggie door leading directly outside, where they learn to go potty on their own. By the time your puppy comes home, they already have a head start on one of the hardest parts of puppyhood.
Be cautious of breeders who won’t show you where the puppies live or who only meet buyers in parking lots.
3. How do you socialize your puppies?
Look for specific answers — early neurological stimulation, intentional handling from birth, exposure to different surfaces and sounds, interaction with people of different ages. Vague answers like “we spend time with them” are a yellow flag.
At Strong Oaks we follow a structured early development protocol from the first days of life through the time puppies go home. We’re happy to walk any family through exactly what that looks like.
4. What does your health guarantee cover and for how long?
A meaningful health guarantee covers heritable and congenital conditions for at least two years — ideally longer. Read the fine print carefully. Some guarantees are written in ways that make claims nearly impossible — requiring procedures most families won’t pursue, or replacing the puppy rather than covering costs.
Our guarantee at Strong Oaks covers five years and includes crippling hip and elbow dysplasia, pathological spinal disorders, and life-threatening genetic defects. We’ve stood behind it for over 30 years.
5. What generation of Goldendoodle do you breed?
F1, F1B, F1BB — a knowledgeable breeder should be able to explain what each generation means, why they breed the generations they do, and which might be the best fit for your family’s specific situation. If a breeder can’t walk you through it clearly, that’s worth noting.
6. How do you match puppies to families?
Different breeders handle this differently. Some assign puppies based on pick order. Others make recommendations based on temperament observation. Neither approach is inherently wrong, but you should understand how it works before you commit.
At Strong Oaks, families come to us to meet the puppies and make their own selection. We share our observations and can help guide the decision, but ultimately you choose the puppy that feels right for your family.
7. What support do you offer after the puppy goes home?
A breeder who disappears after pickup day is a red flag. Responsible breeders stay connected to the families they place puppies with — available for questions, guidance, and support throughout the life of the dog.
We mean that literally at Strong Oaks. Our families have our number and they use it. Questions about food, behavior, grooming, health concerns — we’re here for all of it. That relationship starts at pickup day and doesn’t end.
8. Is this a carefully planned program?
What you’re really trying to understand is whether the breeder is intentional about every litter they plan. A responsible family breeding program can produce multiple litters a year and do it exceptionally well. What matters is whether each litter is carefully planned, each puppy genuinely cared for, and each family thoughtfully matched. Ask how they decide when to breed, how they select pairings, and what their process looks like from birth to pickup day. The answers will tell you far more than any number could.
9. Can I speak with families you’ve placed puppies with?
Reputable breeders are proud of their placements and happy to connect prospective buyers with past families. If a breeder is reluctant or unable to provide references, that tells you something.
10. Why do you breed Goldendoodles?
This one sounds soft but tells you a lot. The answer you’re looking for is genuine passion — for the dogs, for the breed, for the families they go to. Joe started training dogs professionally in 1991 and hasn’t stopped since. We breed Goldendoodles because we love these dogs and love watching families fall in love with them. That’s been true for over 30 years and it’s still true today.
A Final Note
No breeder is perfect, and a good breeder won’t claim to be. What you’re looking for is someone honest, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in the wellbeing of their dogs and their buyers — someone who can back up their claims with evidence you can verify.
