F1 vs F1B vs F2 Goldendoodle: Which Generation Is Right for You?

· 4 min read

If you’ve spent any time researching Goldendoodles, you’ve probably run into terms like F1, F1B, and F1BB — and wondered what on earth they actually mean. You’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get from families, and it’s worth understanding before you commit to a puppy.

The short answer: these labels describe the generation of the Goldendoodle and directly affect coat type, shedding, and grooming needs. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Do the Generation Labels Mean?

The “F” stands for filial, which is just a scientific term for hybrid generations. The number tells you how many generations removed the dog is from its purebred ancestors. Simple once you know the code.

At Strong Oaks, we focus on F1, F1B, and F1BB Goldendoodles — the generations we’ve found produce the most consistent, healthy, and family-friendly puppies.

F1 Goldendoodle — The Classic Cross

An F1 Goldendoodle is a first-generation cross: one purebred Golden Retriever parent and one purebred Standard Poodle parent. A true 50/50 split.

This is the original Goldendoodle. F1s tend to have that loose, wavy coat most people picture when they think of a Goldendoodle — not as curly as a Poodle, not as straight as a Golden. They’re low to moderate shedders, which works well for many families, and they carry that classic, teddy-bear look that made the breed famous.

The tradeoff is that F1 litters can have some variation in coat type from puppy to puppy — because genetics don’t always split evenly down the middle.

Best for: Families who want the classic Goldendoodle look and don’t have severe allergies.

F1B Goldendoodle — The Allergy-Friendly Choice

An F1B is an F1 Goldendoodle bred back to a purebred Poodle. That “B” stands for backcross. The result is a dog that’s approximately 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever.

The higher Poodle percentage means curlier coats and significantly less shedding — making F1Bs one of the most popular choices for allergy-sensitive families. The coats are more consistent across litters too, so there are fewer surprises.

The one thing to know: curlier coats require more grooming. An F1B will need brushing several times a week and professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks to keep the coat healthy and tangle-free.

Best for: Families with mild to moderate allergies who want a low-shedding dog and don’t mind regular grooming.

F1BB Goldendoodle — The Premium Low-Shedding Choice

The F1BB is produced by breeding an F1B Goldendoodle back to a purebred Poodle again. This makes the F1BB approximately 87.5% Poodle and 12.5% Golden Retriever — and it’s one of the most sought-after generations on the market today.

F1BB Goldendoodles have the curliest, most Poodle-like coats of any generation we breed. For families with more significant allergies, this is often the generation that makes dog ownership finally possible. Shedding is minimal to none, and the coats are highly consistent from puppy to puppy.

They still carry the warmth, gentleness, and affectionate personality of the Goldendoodle — they just happen to be the best option for households where allergies are a real concern.

The grooming commitment is the highest of the three generations. F1BBs need regular brushing and professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks without fail. But for the right family, it’s absolutely worth it.

Best for: Families with significant allergies who want the lowest-shedding Goldendoodle possible and are committed to a consistent grooming routine.

So Which Generation Is Right for Your Family?

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

If allergies are not a concern and you love the classic Goldendoodle look, an F1 is a wonderful choice that many families fall in love with at first sight.

If you have mild to moderate allergies or simply prefer a lower-shedding dog, an F1B is likely your sweet spot — beautiful coat, great temperament, manageable grooming.

If allergies are a significant concern in your household, the F1BB is worth serious consideration. It’s the generation we recommend most for allergy-sensitive families, and demand for them is consistently high.
