When families start researching Goldendoodles, one of the first questions that comes up is size. Mini or Standard? It’s a fair question — and one we’re happy to answer, because after 30 years of raising dogs and working with families across the Southeast, we made a deliberate choice to breed Standard Goldendoodles exclusively. Here’s why.
The Size Breakdown
Before we get into our reasoning, here’s a quick overview of what the size categories actually mean:
Mini Goldendoodle — 15 to 35 lbs, bred using a Miniature Poodle parent.
Medium Goldendoodle — 35 to 50 lbs, bred using a Moyen or smaller Standard Poodle.
Standard Goldendoodle — 50 to 90 lbs, bred using a Standard Poodle parent.
At Strong Oaks, every puppy we raise is a Standard. Our sire Samson is a 60-pound red Standard Poodle, and our dam Charlie is a 55-pound Goldendoodle — producing puppies that are sturdy, substantial, and built for family life.
📸 Photo tip: Add a photo here of one of your Standard puppies — ideally showing their size and personality. A puppy being held or sitting with a family member works great.
Why We Breed Standards — And Only Standards
We didn’t land on Standard Goldendoodles by accident. It was a deliberate decision based on years of experience working with dogs and families.
Standard Goldendoodles are, in our opinion, the breed at its best. The combination of a full-sized Golden Retriever’s warmth and a Standard Poodle’s intelligence produces a dog with exceptional balance — physically and temperamentally. They’re calm enough to be gentle with children, athletic enough to keep up with active families, and big enough to have that undeniable presence that makes a Goldendoodle feel like a true family member.
Breeding smaller versions of a dog isn’t always straightforward. Miniaturizing any breed introduces additional health considerations, and the temperament can shift in ways that don’t always serve families well. We’d rather do one thing and do it exceptionally well than try to be everything to everyone.
Standards Are Built for Family Life
This is the heart of it. Standard Goldendoodles are purpose-built for the kind of family life most of our customers are living.
They’re confident and sturdy around young children — not easily overwhelmed or knocked over. They have the size and endurance to go on hikes, runs, and outdoor adventures, then come home and settle in calmly with the family. They tend to mature into wonderfully even-tempered dogs that are a genuine joy to live with.
Time and again, families who come to us having considered both sizes end up grateful they went Standard. There’s a reason it’s the most popular size — and the one we’ve built our entire program around.
Best for: Families with children, active households, homes with yards, anyone who wants the full Goldendoodle experience.
What About Smaller Living Spaces?
We get this question occasionally from families in apartments or smaller homes. Our honest answer: a well-exercised Standard Goldendoodle can absolutely thrive in a smaller space. These dogs adapt well to their environment as long as their exercise needs are met. A tired Standard is a happy, calm Standard — regardless of how big the house is.
If you’re genuinely concerned about space, give us a call. We’d rather have an honest conversation than see a puppy go to a home that isn’t the right fit.
