“Are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic?” is one of the most Googled questions about the breed — and the answer is a little more nuanced than most people expect. If you or someone in your family has allergies, this is worth understanding before you bring a puppy home.
The Short Answer
No dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic. That’s a fact that applies to every breed, including Poodles. What varies between breeds — and between individual dogs — is how much they shed and how much dander they produce. Those two factors are what trigger most pet allergies.
Goldendoodles, particularly those with curlier coats, are among the better options for allergy-sensitive families. But “better” doesn’t mean “guaranteed.” Here’s what actually matters.
What Causes Pet Allergies?
Most people assume they’re allergic to dog hair. In reality, the culprit is usually a protein called Can f 1, found in dog dander, saliva, and urine. Hair itself isn’t the allergen — but it carries dander, which is why heavy shedders tend to be harder on allergy sufferers.
Dogs that shed less distribute less dander around your home. That’s why low-shedding breeds like Poodles are often recommended for allergy-sensitive households — and why Goldendoodles with a higher Poodle percentage tend to be easier to live with for people with allergies.
How Generation Affects Shedding
This is where the F1, F1B, and F1BB labels we discussed in a previous post become really important.
F1 Goldendoodles (50% Poodle) tend to have wavy coats and are low to moderate shedders. Many allergy sufferers do fine with an F1, but it’s not a guarantee.
F1B Goldendoodles (75% Poodle) have curlier coats and shed significantly less. A strong choice for families with mild to moderate allergies.
F1BB Goldendoodles (87.5% Poodle) have the curliest, most Poodle-like coats and the lowest shedding of any generation we breed. For families with more significant allergies, this is often the generation that makes dog ownership possible.

How to Know If a Goldendoodle Will Work for Your Allergies
The honest truth is there’s no way to know for certain until you spend time with a specific dog. Allergies are highly individual — some people react to certain dogs and not others, even within the same breed and generation.
Here’s what we recommend for allergy-sensitive families:
Spend time with a Goldendoodle before committing. If you know someone with one, visit them. If possible, ask your breeder if you can meet the parent dogs.
Consider going with an F1B or F1BB generation to give yourself the best odds of a low-shedding coat.
Talk to your allergist. Some allergy sufferers find that regular grooming, air purifiers, and keeping the dog out of the bedroom make a significant difference in day-to-day comfort.
