Goldendoodle vs Standard Poodle: What’s the Difference?

· 4 min read

Both breeds show up constantly in the same conversations, and for good reason — every Goldendoodle is at least half Standard Poodle by genetics, and many of ours carry even more Poodle influence than that. As the same family that raises Standard Goldendoodles here at Strong Oaks and Standard Poodles through our own Poodles of Piedmont program — both right here in Morganton — we don’t have a stake in steering you toward one over the other. We just want to help you understand the real differences so you can choose what’s right for your family.

Where They Overlap

Standard Poodles make up at least half of every Goldendoodle’s genetic makeup — and significantly more in our F1B and F1BB litters, which are bred back toward the Poodle side. That shared ancestry means a lot of overlapping traits: high intelligence, strong trainability, and — depending on generation — a low-shedding, curly to wavy coat. Both breeds are athletic, both do exceptionally well with active families, and both have a long track record as outstanding companion dogs.

Where They Differ: Temperament

Standard Poodles are known for their deep loyalty and remarkably sharp intelligence — many people are surprised by just how perceptive and tuned-in a well-bred Poodle is to their family. They tend to form especially close bonds within their immediate household and can take a little more time warming up to new people, which many owners find endearing rather than limiting.

Goldendoodles bring the Golden Retriever’s broadly social, eager-to-please nature into the mix alongside that same Poodle intelligence. The result is usually a dog that warms up to new people more quickly and wears its affection a bit more visibly. Our full Goldendoodle temperament guide covers this in more depth.

Both temperaments are wonderful — it comes down to what fits your household. Families who want a dog that’s instantly outgoing with every visitor, every kid at the park, and every stranger on a walk often love the Goldendoodle’s blend. Families drawn to a slightly more devoted, one-family kind of bond often fall in love with the classic Poodle temperament.

Coat and Shedding

A well-bred Standard Poodle is about as close to non-shedding as dogs get, with a dense, curly single coat that’s a hallmark of the breed. Goldendoodles vary more depending on generation — an F1 may shed somewhat more, while an F1B or F1BB, bred back toward the Poodle side, gets much closer to true Poodle-level shedding. Our coat types guide and shedding guide cover exactly how generation affects this.

Grooming Needs

Both breeds require regular grooming — this isn’t a low-maintenance coat in either case. Poodles are traditionally clipped into specific styles and need professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks. Goldendoodles need similarly regular grooming, though most families opt for a simpler, shorter “teddy bear” trim. Our grooming guide walks through what that routine looks like.

Size and Build

Standard Poodles and Standard Goldendoodles land in a similar size range, though Poodles tend to be a bit leaner and more elegant in build, while Goldendoodles are typically a bit stockier and more solidly built — closer to the Golden Retriever’s frame. Our Samson, a red Standard Poodle, is part of how we maintain that Poodle influence in our own breeding program — you can meet him and our other dogs here.

Trainability

Both breeds are exceptionally intelligent and consistently rank among the smartest in the world. Poodles are quick studies with a confident, independent-minded streak — many experienced owners love how engaged and thoughtful a Poodle is during training. Goldendoodles, with the Golden Retriever’s people-pleasing instinct layered in, often show a bit more consistent eagerness to please right out of the gate, which many first-time owners find especially approachable.

Which Should You Choose?

Both breeds make exceptional companions, and there’s truly no wrong choice here — it comes down to which traits matter most for your family.

If you’re drawn to the classic Standard Poodle experience — that confident, deeply bonded temperament, the renowned low-shedding coat, and a dog that’s a little more selectively social — you’ll love working with Poodles of Piedmont, our own Standard Poodle program, run by the same family right here in Morganton, with the same health testing and family-raised standards you’d expect from Strong Oaks.

If you want that same intelligence and low-shedding potential blended with the Golden Retriever’s universally warm, easygoing nature, a Standard Goldendoodle is likely the right fit — and that’s exactly what we specialize in here.

Either way, you’re in good hands with our family. If you have questions about which generation might suit your family best, our F1 vs F1B vs F1BB guide is a good next read.
