Why We Chose the Blue Ridge Mountains to Raise Our Goldendoodles

· 4 min read

People ask us sometimes how we ended up in Morganton, North Carolina — tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains on 12 acres with a house full of kids, grandkids, and Goldendoodles. The honest answer is that it wasn’t a straight line. It was a journey that took us through several states, multiple chapters of life, and a lot of years figuring out what we were really building toward.

Where It Started

Joe and Sharon grew up in Maryland — high school sweethearts who built their life together from the very beginning. Dogs were always part of that life. Joe had a natural instinct for working with animals, a patience and understanding of canine behavior that most people spend careers trying to develop.

In 1992, he started training German Shepherds professionally. There’s something about the German Shepherd — the intelligence, the drive, the loyalty — that draws serious dog people in. Joe was no different. He immersed himself in it, developing a foundation in canine behavior, obedience, and temperament evaluation that would shape everything that came after.

It didn’t stay German Shepherds for long. The more Joe worked with different breeds, the more his understanding of dogs deepened and broadened. Before long he was training all breeds, all temperaments, all kinds of families and working dogs. Thirty-plus years of that kind of work builds something you can’t learn any other way.

The Road That Led Here

Life took Joe and Sharon north before it took them south. They spent time in upstate New York, on the shores of Lake Ontario — a different world from the mountains they’d eventually call home, but a chapter that shaped them. Then Georgia, where the South started to feel like the right direction.

And then Morganton.

If you’ve never been to Burke County, it’s worth the drive just to see it. The Blue Ridge Mountains rise up in every direction. The air is clean. The land is generous. When Joe and Sharon found their property — 12 acres in the foothills with room to breathe — they knew they were done moving.

How the Goldendoodles Found Us

Somewhere in the middle of all that training and traveling, Joe discovered Standard Poodles. And if the German Shepherd drew him in with its drive and intelligence, the Standard Poodle won him over with something else entirely — a combination of brilliance, elegance, and genuine warmth that surprised people who’d only ever thought of Poodles as show dogs.

The Goldendoodle was a natural next step. Take everything that makes a Standard Poodle exceptional and pair it with the heart of a Golden Retriever — the gentleness, the family devotion, the pure joy of being alive — and you get something remarkable. A dog built for family life. A dog that fits into the rhythms of a busy household, loves children, bonds deeply, and brings something genuinely special to every home it enters.

Joe and Sharon have been raising Goldendoodles for over 15 years now. In that time they’ve raised four children — now ranging from 10 to 31 years old — and welcomed four grandchildren. Every puppy that’s come through Strong Oaks has been raised in the middle of that family life, surrounded by the same love and activity that their own kids grew up with.

Why It Matters That We’re Here

The Blue Ridge Mountains aren’t just a backdrop. They’re part of how we raise our dogs.

Our puppies are born inside our home and spend their first five weeks surrounded by the sounds and warmth of a busy family household. Then they move to our dedicated puppy building — purpose-built for their development, with a doggie door leading directly outside where they begin learning to go potty on their own. All of this happens on 12 acres of clean mountain land where our dogs have room to run, explore, and thrive.

The families who come to pick up their puppies often comment on the environment — the space, the calm, the way the dogs carry themselves. We think it shows. A puppy raised in a place like this, by a family that genuinely loves what they do, starts life differently than one raised in a cage.

What We’re Building

After all those years and all those miles — Maryland to New York to Georgia to the Blue Ridge Mountains — what Joe and Sharon have built in Morganton is exactly what they were always working toward. A place where dogs are raised right. A family business built on integrity. A program they’re proud to put their name on.

When you bring home a Strong Oaks puppy, you’re getting more than a dog. You’re getting three decades of expertise, a family that cares deeply about every animal we raise, and a connection to a place and a story that started long before you found us.

We’re glad you did.
